Cracks behave differently here than in mild climates. Water enters the crack, freezes, expands, and widens it every cycle.

“A hairline crack today is a wider crack next winter,” Marshall says. “By the time someone calls us because the crack finally looks bad, we are often looking at a bigger repair than if they had called at the hairline stage.”

What escalation looks like:

  • Year one: hairline crack, cosmetic, repairable in isolation
  • Year two or three: crack widens, water reaches the bond coat behind the plaster
  • Year four or beyond: delamination, plaster separating from the shell in sections, full resurfacing regardless of how minor it started
